Untangling family relationships is complicated for most of us, but writing and publishing a personal memoir with clarity and honesty takes a lot of courage.

In Lil O’Brien’s Not That I’d Kiss a Girl, she writes about her own personal journey and movingly recounts the fallout from her parents’ accidental discovery of her sexual orientation.

Charlotte Grimshaw embarks on a search for understanding her own life in her powerful memoir The Mirror Book. Part of that is a parental accounting. There’s her mother Kay who says she’s “too different”, and her father – writer CK Stead – who says, “It’s material; make a story out of it”. Charlotte decides that “the way to save your life is to tell the story that’s true.”
