2009 Programme Launched

The 2009 Festival of Colour programme was launched last night, 12 February 2009, at the Lake Wanaka Centre with a huge variety of outstanding music, theatre, dance, debate and discussion and visual arts. There is bound to be something for everyone so we encourage you to book early as we know that many shows will sell out.

The Festival is still based in Wanaka with the superb Infinity Crystal Palace, Lake Wanaka Centre and the Wanaka Masonic Lodge being the hub of festival fever. But we have expanded our touring programme to give you more chance to see some of the best shows in our wonderful range of community halls – Tarras, Luggate, Hawea, Bannockburn, Arrowtown, Clyde and Glenorchy.

Theatre, dance, music and more…

Festival Director Philip Tremewan unveiled the programme starting with the five world premieres commissioned by the Festival of Colour. He started with ‘Finders Keepers’ a dance work from Raewyn Hill, who brought White and Mercy to previous festivals. This work can be seen at Clyde as well as Wanaka.

The four other premieres all deal with the South Island

  • ‘Le Sud’ a brand new comedy by Dave Armstrong
  • ‘Southern Suite’ composed by Mike Nock and performed by Michael Houstoun and Diedre Irons
  • Grahame Sydney’s documentary ‘Dreaming of El Dorado: the Old Dunstan Road’
  • And finally Flat Out productions, a community theatre group based in Hawea with their take on Shakespeare’s Macbeth woven into our local scene for the brand new play – ‘Witches over Wanaka’.

There is a range of other wonderful theatre - ‘Ship Songs’ ‘Strange Resting Places’ and a family show ‘Tale of A Dog’.

Aspiring Conversations is a mini-festival of ideas and debate with international speakers like Bill McKibben and Christina Lamb, and our own commentators Joe Bennett, Glenn Colquhoun, Hamish Keith and Christopher Finlayson.

Joe Bennett contemplates the journey his pants have made from China to The Warehouse

In the field of visual arts we have a special group of artists working here over the festival, looking at markers on the land – Pouwhenua.

Then there’s the music programme with classical music, jazz, folk, world music and cabaret in daytime and evening shows at the Infinity Crystal Palace – from Helen Medlyn to the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, from the Kransky Sisters to SJD.

New to the festival, this time round we are running a late night club – with more music from 11 until midnight.

Community Programme

The community programme sees Wanaka taken
over by Street theatre on the Saturday – lots of performers
plus this wonderful tiny installation for the kids

There’s also an arts trail and a garden tour – taking in beautiful established autumn gardens in and around Wanaka.
